Solid wood furniture is known for its stability, durability and aesthetics. However, its lasting beauty depends heavily on proper surface care. Three conventional methods of surface care - varnish, oil and wax - each offer unique advantages. According to the Initiative Pro Massivholz (IPM), it is crucial that the method suits both the buyer's taste and the intended use of the piece of furniture.<\/p>\n
The application of varnish seals the pores of the solid wood. This protects the furniture from external influences such as spilled liquids. The varnish does restrict the breathability of the wood. However, there is no need for subsequent treatment as the surface is permanently sealed.<\/p>\n
Oil, on the other hand, penetrates deep into the pores of the wood without closing them completely. This allows the wood to breathe and retain its natural properties, such as moisture regulation. In addition, oil enhances the natural pigments of the wood and thus emphasizes the colour intensity of the furniture. Wax offers another natural option for surface treatment, which highlights color accents and also offers increased abrasion protection. According to IPM, all treatment methods require specialist knowledge and are carried out professionally by the manufacturers.<\/p>\n
