Prof. Dr. Harald Funke and his team at the Department of Aerospace Engineering at FH Aachen - University of Applied Sciences have received the German Gas Industry Innovation Award in the \"Efficient Application Technology\" category for the co-development of their H2 micro-mix burner, which enables hydrogen to be burned in gas turbines with low emissions, safely and in a CO2-neutral manner.<\/p>\n
The design of the hydrogen combustion chamber and the special micro-mix combustion process (MMX) were invented back in the 1990s by Dr. Friedemann Suttrop, a professor emeritus at Aachen University of Applied Sciences. Further development has taken place since 2004 under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Harald Funke. With MMX, many small flames are used instead of a few large ones as in conventional firing processes.<\/p>\n
Thanks to the special design of the combustion chamber, less nitrogen oxide is produced during the combustion of hydrogen. The \"H2-Micro-Mix-Burner\" project not only involves researchers from FH Aachen. It is also supported by a research alliance of Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd, B&B Agema GmbH and the Institute of Power Plant Technology, Steam and Gas Turbines at RWTH Aachen University.<\/p>\n
