At the turn of the year, many suppliers in the basic supply reduce their electricity and gas prices. Most households benefit from a reduction in electricity prices in particular. Nevertheless, an analysis by Verivox shows that switching to another provider is often still cheaper, as the basic supply usually remains more expensive than alternative offers.
Verivox reports that 280 suppliers are reducing electricity prices by an average of 10 percent. This affects around 1.8 million households and leads to an annual saving of around 189 euros for an average consumption. However, 47 suppliers are increasing their prices by around 8 percent, which means additional costs of around 116 euros per year for around 300,000 households. In the case of gas, 211 suppliers are reducing their prices by an average of 12 percent, while 64 suppliers are increasing their prices by 18 percent.
Despite the price reductions, the price of the basic supply remains high. The cost of a kilowatt hour of gas and electricity is significantly lower if customers conclude a contract with the cheapest electricity or gas provider. Consumers should therefore regularly check the offers of other providers, as in most cases a switch will bring big savings. Although prices in the basic supply are falling, switching to alternative providers is often the more lucrative option.
